Storm Stick It To The Rivermen

Quad City broke through Saturday night and beat the Peoria Rivermen 4-3 in front of a raucous crowd of more than 5000.

A fast start set the game on the right track.  John Scully won an attacking zone draw following a Peoria icing and Ben Boukal fired a shot from the point Scully deflected passed Peoria goaltender Storm Phaneuf.

Scully recorded his second of the night (initially credited to Skyler Smutek) from almost the exact same spot on the ice off a Tommy Tsicos faceoff win and shot from Smutek at the point.

Leading 2-0 into the second period QC saw their lead slashed in half by a Justin Greenberg power-play goal at 2:24 of the second.  Greenberg would score Peoria’s second goal as well, but not before Dean Yakura finished a beautiful score off a cross-crease pass from Shane Bennett at 8:46 of period two.

Following Greenberg’s second goal which made it 3-2, Mitch Mueller rifled home his team-leading twelfth goal of the year on a 3-on-1 to make it 4-2.  Peoria would add a third goal but the Storm were able to fight through the late rush and hang on to win 4-3.

Peter Di Salvo recorded his eighth win of the year and made 32 saves on 35 shots.

With the win the Storm become the first team in the SPHL to beat Peoria twice in regulation and three times (OT/SO/REG.).

The Storm now sit five points behind the Pensacola Ice Flyers for the final playoff spot.
