Peoria Beats Storm In Penalty Bonanza

A shorthanded Storm team fell 6-1 Saturday night against Peoria in a game that featured 199 penalty minutes, including eight game misconducts.

Al Graves dropped the gloves with Peoria captain Alec Hagaman one-minute into the game.  Graves was ejected and awarded five for fighting and a two-minute instigator, offset by a roughing minor on Hagaman.

Peoria got out to a 2-0 lead with a 5 on 3 powerplay goal and even strength tally from Austin Vieth at 15:49 of the first.

Mitch Mueller made it a one-goal game at 9:06 of the second period with a quick wrist shot from a tough angle on the power-play.

Peoria scored twice in the second period and brought the 4-1 advantage into the third.

The Rivermen would add two more goals and win 6-1, but the story of the third, and the game as a whole, was the numbers racked up in the penalty column.  Quad City earned a franchise record 107 PIM, including fighting majors against Al Graves, Phil Bronner, Joe McKeown and Peter Di Salvo.  Yes, that Peter Di Salvo.  After Phil Bronner collided with Peoria netminder Storm Phaneuf, Bronner engaged with Austin Vieth and Phaneuf skated the length of the ice to drop the glove and blocker with the Mad Dog.

Merry Christmas and happy holidays Storm fans!  We’ll see you December 28th!!
